How data extraction works

Web data extraction (or web scraping) is a technique of extracting information (e.g. text, images) from websites into easy, viewable form (e.g. spreadsheet or database) using computer software (spider) that is set to do it. After properly setting spider, it visits websites and automatically gathers the required information (in most cases from HTML code). Extracted data can be exported into various formats (Excel, XML, SQL etc.).
 
Uses of web scraping include textual online-data structuring into spreadsheets, online-media monitoring by collecting product reviews on message boards and forums, downloading large amount of PDF, Word, Excel and image files posted online, web data integration, research and online price comparison.
